Memory, Memory, Memory by Alex Bierk
from Alex Bierk
Alex Bierk's 'Memory, Memory, Memory' is a small and powerful collection of works on paper in watercolor, gouache, and ink published following the artist's 2017 show of the same name at New York's Mulherin Gallery.
Bierk's work explores the physical and emotional borderlands of loneliness, addiction/recovery, and longing in spare, monochromatic vignettes that sit on the page with a quiet urgency. Portals and screens abound; doors, windows, and fences illuminate and obfuscate in equal measure. Lone figures drift in and out of the landscape on foot, in old cars, and on bicycles, searching for something that feels just beyond reach.
Carefully arranged and sequenced in a manner that mimics the salon-style of the original exhibition, the cumulative effect is stunning for its depth and genuine honesty.
